Science #12 – The Secret Science Inside Your Induction Cooker!

Everyday Science, Everyday Wonder

Simple questions, smart answers.

Induction cookers are loved for being fast, clean, and super convenient. But have you ever wondered how they can heat a pot so quickly without a flame? Or why sometimes a pretty pot makes a “ding!” and the cooker stops working? Let’s explore the hidden science of electromagnetic induction!

Magic Heat Without Fire

An induction cooker uses magnetic fields to make your pot hot. Special induction pots contain iron or other magnetic metals, which react to the magnetic field.

Under the smooth glass surface of the cooker, there’s a hidden coil. When electricity flows through this coil, it creates a high-frequency magnetic field. When this field passes through the bottom of the pot, it makes the electrons inside move rapidly — almost like they’re dancing!

These moving electrons create tiny whirlpools called eddy currents inside the pot.

How Eddy Currents Make Heat

The magic happens here:
Electromagnetic induction → Eddy currents → Heat!

The eddy currents meet the pot’s electrical resistance, and their energy turns into heat. In other words, the moving electrons bump into tiny particles inside the pot, creating friction heat.

Unlike a gas stove, the pot itself becomes hot, while the induction surface stays relatively cool. That’s why induction cookers are efficient and safe.

Why Not Any Pot Works

Pots made of stainless steel or iron work great. But glass, ceramic, or aluminum pots don’t. Why?

These materials are non-magnetic, so they don’t react to the magnetic field. Without that reaction, no eddy currents are generated — and no heat appears.

In Short

Induction cookers are clever devices that use invisible magnetic fields to shake electrons in the pot and make it heat itself.

Using the right pot isn’t just a preference — it’s essential for the induction cooker to work at its best.

Next time you see your pot heating up without a flame, you’ll know it’s not magic — it’s science in action! 🔥
